The Damascus Community Fair Is This Weekend

80 years of tradition returns September 11-13 at the Damascus Volunteer Fire Department's Carnival Grounds on Lewis Drive, where the fair has been held since 1989 (it started at Damascus High School back in 1926, with a break around World War II and another in 2020 for COVID). Free admission, free parking, and something for everyone: an exhibit hall full of food, flowers, photography, art, and handicrafts, barns of animals and poultry, live entertainment, and good food. In past years the weekend has followed a familiar rhythm, Friday's Kids' Day and evening events, Saturday's Fun Run and Family Day capped off with the Cake Auction, and Sunday's Grandparents' Day. Details here.

Damascus Teen Charged After Fatal Crash in Howard County

An 18-year-old Damascus resident, John Amare, was charged after a crash on I-70 near Morgan Station Road in Howard County on Monday, September 1st. Police say his car struck the back of a box truck, which then hit a guardrail and overturned. A passenger in the truck, Sakee Ali Davis, 32, of Havre de Grace, was pronounced dead at the scene. The truck's driver was hospitalized. Amare faces charges including negligent motor vehicle homicide while impaired and negligent manslaughter, and is being held without bond. He has not been convicted of anything at this point. Full details here.

County Pushes Back on Federal Gun Law Lawsuit

Quick update on the gun law story from last issue: Montgomery County has asked the court to dismiss the Justice Department's lawsuit over the county's new firearms buffer zones, calling the DOJ's argument "flatly wrong." A hearing on whether to temporarily block the law was set for September 3rd in federal court; as of this writing we haven't seen a ruling. We'll keep you posted. More here.
