Free Catalytic Converter Etching Is Back, Sept. 9
Last week I told you about my own car getting stolen right here in Damascus. This week, Montgomery County Police have something you can actually do about it before it happens to you. On Wednesday, September 9, MCPD is holding "Operation: Etch & Catch," partnering with local body shops to etch and paint your catalytic converter for free. It's meant to deter theft and help police recover a converter if it's ever stolen, and you'll get a window cling showing your car's been etched. Appointments are first come, first served, sign up with the QR code on MCPD's flyer.
Montgomery County's New Gun Law Is Now Facing Two Federal Lawsuits
The gun law changes the County Council passed in July (sponsored by Dawn Luedtke, our own District 7 rep) are being challenged in federal court, twice over. The Justice Department itself sued the county on August 4, arguing the law's 100-yard no-carry buffer zones around thousands of locations, covering roughly a quarter of the county, violate the Second Amendment. Separately, the Silver Spring Jewish Center and a local rabbi sued separately over the buffer zones' effect on houses of worship. State's Attorney John McCarthy has agreed not to prosecute anyone for violations while that second case is pending, though the county could still pursue civil penalties. A hearing on whether to block the law entirely is set for September 3.
