Today's the Last Day of the Damascus Community Fair

Sunday, September 13 is Grandparents' Day, the fair's final day this year after Thursday's opening night, Friday's Kids' Day, and Saturday's Family Day. In past years the day has included a touch-a-truck event, a pet show, and the dairy livestock show, with entries released by 6pm. Details here.

$100,000 State Grant Will Help Shape Downtown Damascus

Montgomery Planning has received a $100,000 state grant to develop a streetscape improvement plan for downtown Damascus, covering sidewalks, landscaping, lighting, and the pedestrian experience along Main Street. The effort is led by State Senator Katie Fry Hester, with support from State Senator Craig Zucker and County Councilmember Dawn Luedtke. It builds on the 2024 Damascus Placemaking Festival and a separate Main Street Maryland grant, and will run alongside the upcoming Damascus Main Street Sector Plan Amendment starting this fall. Damascus School Bus Rear-Ended, Three Taken to Hospital

A Montgomery County school bus carrying eight people, the driver, two aides, and five students, was rear-ended Friday morning at Woodfield Road and Greenel Road in Damascus. One student and both aides were taken to the hospital with minor injuries; no other students were hurt. Full story here.

Mount Airy Standoff Ends in Arrest

A three-hour standoff on Wind Ridge Road in Mount Airy ended around 7am Saturday with the arrest of 59-year-old Kevin Lee Daughton after neighbors reported gunshots. Per the Carroll County Sheriff's Office, two guests fled the home after Daughton retrieved a gun, and shots were heard as they ran. No one was hurt. Daughton faces first-degree assault, second-degree assault, and two counts of reckless endangerment. Full story here.

The town will hold its special election for mayor on Tuesday, November 17, filling the seat Larry Hushour is vacating. Nomination meetings are Tuesday, September 15, and Tuesday, September 22, both at 7pm at Mount Airy Town Hall. Voter registration deadline is October 13. Details here.
