Damascus High Rebuild: Community Meetings Start Tomorrow
MCPS is holding three community meetings on the design of the new Damascus High School, all at 6pm in the DHS cafeteria:
Monday, October 12: Meet the project team, learn the timeline, and share ideas on site access, building layout and the school’s future.
Wednesday, October 28: Review the architects’ early design options and give feedback.
Monday, November 9: Review the updated design. The architects will use this feedback to finalize the plan they take to the Board of Education.
That Leaf Blower Post: Here’s What the Law Actually Says
A post from a Damascus resident who says they were reported for using a gas leaf blower got more than 140 reactions and 80+ comments in Damascus, MD Neighbors and Friends this week. For anyone wondering about the rules: Montgomery County’s ban on using gas-powered leaf blowers took effect July 1, 2025. Fines are $500 for a first offense and $750 after that, though the county said early on that it would focus first on education. Last November the County Council dropped the requirement that complaints include a photo or video, and a proposal to exempt landscapers did not pass.
Barn Fire on Route 108 Causes $300,000+ in Damage
More than 60 firefighters responded around 2am Monday, October 5, to a large barn fire along Laytonsville Road (Route 108) near Griffith Road in Laytonsville. With no hydrants in the area, tanker trucks shuttled in water. The hay barn was a total loss, with damage estimated at more than $300,000. No people or animals were hurt. The cause is still under investigation, and investigators are considering spontaneous combustion.
Adult Hospitalized After Fight Following Clarksburg Flag Football Game
Poolesville and Clarksburg high schools say a physical altercation broke out in the parking lot after Monday evening’s girls’ flag football game at Poolesville High. An adult was taken to the hospital and police responded. Both principals called it a serious incident and said an investigation is ongoing. No charges have been reported.

Maggi’s Pizza & Subs
Maggi’s is run by brothers Patrick and Chris Maggi, who are carrying on the work of their father, Pasquale “Pat” Maggi. Pat managed restaurants in Rockville and Wheaton in the late 1960s and early 1970s. The brothers opened at 26315 Ridge Road in March 2010 as Pasquale’s Deli, named for their dad, and later renamed it Maggi’s Pizza & Subs. The pizza is based on their father’s recipe, and the menu also has classic Italian subs, sandwiches, pasta, salads and desserts. This week’s specials include a Meatloaf Sammy and Cream of Crab soup.
